Wilderness therapy may not be one of the most common methods that have been applied in the past times but it provides a new way of offering advice to teens. The method has been found to be favorable for teenagers though it can also be used to help adults who are in the 18-28 age bracket. But the therapy is mainly meant for the youthful groups who are in need of a change of behavior. The therapy is carried outdoors since it is a subset of adventure based therapy. However the method should not be mistaken as a solution to all problems that face teenagers. Unless one is willing to change through first realizing about themselves, this method may prove to be unsuccessful.
The first steps involves placing the learners into groups which is done by experts in the field. The groups should be constituted by a few individuals in order to have manageable groups. The experts choose leaders to lead the groups which they have formed who are tasked with guiding the learners through the process. The the first step involves accepting one’s current situation which they open up about to the experts. Some have been drug addicts or computer games addicts who may have resulted in a fractured relationship between the teens and other members of the society.
Any therapy is tasked with creating awareness among victims, and wilderness therapy is not different. Experts who have knowledge on the daily lives of the victims and challenges that they face aiding the process. The process can only be achieved in an environment where there are no distractions such as friends, family members, schools, computers or the normal life. Basic necessities is all that one needs such as water and sleeping bags during the period of therapy.
The instructor first helps the teens to realize they can control what is under their control and leave what they cannot under their control. To illustrate this, specific examples are given using physical features and things. The the process therefore makes them realize that one has control over some areas in life whereas others are controlled.
It is normal for the teens to encounter challenges during the process of wilderness therapy due to the change in their normal way of living. The challenges may be controllable or they may not. It is an important way of self-discovery. To solve the challenges they may need to unite and fight the challenge as a group if the challenge is common. It is valuable for them also to learn how to confront problems on their own. Parents are also required to support the teens during this period.
